Live streaming of video on smartphones became a reality for social media users of Twitter last month, after the acquisition of ‘Periscope.’
“Today, we’re excited to introduce Periscope, a new app that lets you share and experience live video from your mobile phone. We think it’s a perfect complement to Twitter, which is why we acquired the company in January,” a statement on Twitter’s website reads.
Periscope is currently available in the Apple App Store, and an Android app is in the works. According to Wall Street Journal, Twitter recently acquired the start-up company called Periscope for less than $100 million. Twitter’s entry into live video streaming service came at the heel of Meerkat, another live app that is already in use by the public and is a constant companion apps for concerts or public performances around the world.
The acquisition reflects Twitter’s move to bolster its video capabilities. In the past year, the company started testing video ads and launched the ability for users to upload and edit their own videos.
