Anekwe has also received many rave reviews for his theater performances. He and the cast of “Real Black Men Don’t Sit Crossed Legged On The Floor” won the 2006 VIV Award for Best Ensemble cast, where the New York Times was quoted saying, watching Anekwe was “exciting”!

This is a film guaranteed to appeal to the masses.  A love story set against the real backdrop of the War on Drugs and controversial immigration policies, this film is set in the moment.  Men and women in the prized 18-49 year old demographic will be able to relate to our characters’ struggles.  They will find themselves wrapped up in the drama of the storytelling.

The film is the US directorial debut of Joy Dickson.  Inspired by Dickson’s own personal experiences, the film explores varied themes such as identity, culture, and moral codes, as well as race relations between African-Americans and Africans.

The film was guided by Director of Photography (Michael Morlan) and features breakthrough performances by Dajuan Johnson, Nakia Burrise, and Nigerian superstar Jim Iyke.

KALU – Dajuan Johnson

Dajuan Johnson’s previous credits include MTV Productions’ Pedro, a film based on the life of MTV reality star Pedro Zamora, who died of AIDS in 1994.  Pedro was written by Dustin Lance Black, who recently won an Oscar for Milk.  His numerous television appearances include roles on “Private Practice,” “Scrubs,” and “CSI: NY”.  His national television appearances include ads for GM, Southwest Airlines, and McDonald’s.
Dajuan’s roles are on the rise both in the United States and abroad.  He was just cast in a recurring role on Fox’s “24” and finished shooting for a Japanese cell phone commercial with Brad Pitt.  Dajuan is in production for The Wrath of Cain, starring Ving Rhames and Robert Patrick.

Wrapped Between Kings and Queens in Austin last week. Had a great shoot and met some great people, but I’m happy to be home. What a great challenge as an actor to get to work on a film where you have to have an accent. One of the biggest lessons I learned on this shoot was, “LET GO & MAKE IT WORK.” It’s rather funny how we do ALL the prep work we need before even getting to the game. But, once we get there we second guess ALL of it. Guess that’s why they call them nerves, eh?

SUSAN – Nakia Burrise

Best known for her role as Tanya Sloan on the television series “Mighty Morphin Power Rangers,” Nakia’s previous credits include appearances on the hit series “Samantha Who” and “Boston Legal.”
After graduating from Edison High School in Stockton, California, Nakia auditioned for UCLA’s prestigious theater department and became the only African American female freshman accepted in the department that year.  By the time she was a junior at UCLA, her professional career had begun.
After Power Rangers, Nakia took a break from acting full time to begin a family. After the birth of her second child she began pursuing acting again but was diagnosed with a lung disease that again took her away from her passion.  In 2008, Nakia was blessed with a clean bill of health (as her illness was now in remission) and she once again pursued her dream of acting.

***Nakia’s will to overcome life’s obstacles are incessant and her desires do not begin and end with performing.  She is also committed to making a difference in the community and in the children’s lives.  In 2006, Nakia founded a non-profit corporation, A Day in the Life – whose mission is to reach inner city children by giving them the opportunity to explore careers, life options and community possibilities through field trips, presentations and field work; opportunities not readily accessible to many inner city youths.

NANNA – Jim Iyke

Jim Iyke is one of Nigeria’s most popular actors, with a jaw-dropping 100 movies under his belt in the past five years alone.  Renowned for more than acting skills, he is a martial arts specialist and is celebrated for pioneering a lot of firsts in the home video industry.

Jim Iyke Esomugha was born in Gabon Libreville and hails from Enugu Agidi village of Anambra state Eastern Nigeria.  Jim’s circumstances of birth can only be likened to other great personalities.  As a destiny child, Jim was placed between 7 other sisters, making him the only son amongst his siblings.

Jim Iyke has recently starred in two international films, Ebony (with internationally renowned co-star Judi Shekoni) and Good Evening (with equally renowned co-star Tanjereen Martin).  As a businessman, Jim has considerable interest in real estate and resource management.  He is an alumnus of the University of Jos in Nigeria, with a degree in philosophy.

JOY DICKSON – DIRECTOR

Joy Dickson is a native of West Africa who dreamed of becoming a filmmaker as a teenager.  She directed many plays and the films African Lilly and Mission to Africa in Nigeria before directing Between Kings and Queens.

Passionate and professional, Joy has worked tirelessly for years – during which she experienced the joy of childbirth of her two children – to bring this personal story to fruition. Between Kings and Queens is her directorial debut in the United States.

ASHLEA HARTZ – PRODUCER

Ashlea Hartz has a wealth of experience as a producer.  She started at HBO in 2003, then worked as an Associate Producer for UVPH.  Ashlea has also worked with AT&T, MTV Networks, and Bjork.  Since 2007, she has produced many independent projects with up and coming directors from New York and Los Angeles.

MICHAEL MORLAN –DIRECTOR OF PHOTOGRAPHY:

Since 2005, Michael Morlan has worked on nine feature films, including four as director of photography and three as gaffer/lighting director.  His credits include numerous commercials, music videos, short form narratives, and the 2008 Oscar nominated documentary “Operation Homecoming: Writing the Wartime Experience.”

Q & A W/ JOY DICKSON – DIRECTOR

When did you first decide you wanted to be a filmmaker?
“Well, it started in Africa a long time ago, for as long as I can remember.  As a teenager, my Dad used to buy a lot of films, and so eventually we had a lot of videotapes.  I would sit down and watch a lot of Indian films, Chinese films, and horror films.
“As I was watching, I was imagining, “Hmm, I wonder what this person was thinking while doing this?”  That’s when I first realized I could actually make up stories myself.  So you could say my filmmaking career started way, way back in Africa.”

What was the greatest challenge while filmmaking in Nigeria?
“Piracy was a challenge.  Also, the lack of proper film equipment in Nigeria was a huge challenge.  I once saw a movie that was shot on a track and I was really impressed. But come to find out, that film was shot in Ghana.  In Nigeria, when they wanted to create a tracking shot, they just used a hand held and I mean obviously, you can tell the difference.  So the technical know-how was definitely a challenge in Nigeria. “

What was it like filming “Between Kings and Queens” in Austin, Texas?
“It was wonderful in the sense that I worked with people who had the same passion and who were willing to make a lot of sacrifices on set.  Considering the amount of locations we needed and the budget, we had to maneuver around many obstacles.  I was fully conscious of what I was doing.  I was fully aware of my environment and I really wanted this movie to go a lot higher than my previous work.
“During production, we had to shut down an entire road to shoot a scene and thanks to Austin we were able to do it.  I hope Austin continues to help promote independent films.  For an independent film, we would not be able to shut down an entire street in Los Angeles.”

What was your most memorable moment on set?
“My memorable moment was when we were doing the roof scene.  As I was writing the story, it was one of the scenes that I really, really wanted to see come to life.  The moment when I saw them on the roof, acting out that scene, was very beautiful for me.

What were some of the obstacles along the way?
“Getting financed was one of the major obstacles.  When we first wanted to do this film, the people that said they would come up with the finances were not able to pull through.  Discouragement came then, but what could I have done?  Keep on writing.  My husband has been the single greatest encouragement I’ve ever had.  The main thing that kept me going was the constant encouragement from him.

SUSAN – Do Africans really live in trees?

Where does that question come from?
“Many years ago, my friend Amade was two weeks away from graduation from film school here in Austin.  A fellow student said to Amade, “I heard in Africa, you guys live in trees.”  Amade said, “Yeah, yeah, yeah, we live in trees. The rich live in tall trees and the poor live in small trees,” and the student said, “Really?”  Amade replied, “Yes, you remember when Clinton came to Africa?  We kept him in one of the tallest trees!”  The student still believed him, and said, “Really?”
“Personally, (laughter) I think you must be a fool to believe that.  I mean, for someone who’s graduating in two weeks, at least he should know a little bit more about the world he lives in.  So when Amade was telling us that story (laughter), my husband and I just laughed and laughed and laughed.  Amade is now the main editor on the film. “

What was it like working with Jim Iyke: actor, African movie star
“Funny, funny, funny.  He was a very funny guy.  He got the script two days before he arrived on set and he knocked it off.  It felt so good working with him.  He made everyone crack up constantly while we were shooting.”

Your DP was Michael Morlan, whose credits include numerous music videos and films, including the 2008 Oscar nominated documentary, “Operation Homecoming: Writing the Wartime Experience.
What was it like working alongside him during production?
“He was fantastic.  He was very professional; very, very professional.  He went the extra mile.  Even with the lighting guys who didn’t have as much experience as he had, he was willing to share and help out.”

Do you have any upcoming projects you’d like to tell us about?
“I’m in pre-production for two projects: Chameleon and The Preacher’s Kiss.  I’m still developing The Preacher’s Kiss, but the script for Chameleon is done.  I’m looking forward to this project because it is really going to define how far I will go in this industry.”

Where do you see the future of independent film?
“Independent film is going to go a long way.  I feel there is hope.  In terms of independent filmmaking, you try as hard as possible despite having the idea in your head that you’re competing with big studios.  You try to tell your story in a very simple form for people to understand.  That’s why you’re an independent filmmaker.  Somebody’s not telling you, ‘You have to change this around to suit what we think is right.’
“The beauty of being an independent filmmaker is that you are able to tell your story the way you see fit.   I heard with Tyler Perry, they were telling him to do certain things, but he felt like he wanted to tell his story a certain way, and he has done so well.  As time goes on, I also think it will come to a point with the HD camera, that films will start being releasing in DVD form, not in film reel form.”

“My American Nurse 2” is a comedy that chronicles the experiences of Shehu (Pascal Atuma), a Nigerian cab driver in Los Angeles who has had less than stellar luck with women. Frustrated, Shehu gives up on dating American women and decides to travel home to Nigeria to find himself a wife (Vida Darko, Miss Ghana USA 2002). His plan is to find a nurse that he can bring to the U.S. to become certified so that she can make enough money to pull her own weight. His wife, on the other hand, has other plans and proves to be quite a handful for her unsuspecting husband with her newfound American identity. “My American Nurse 2″ is a humorous yet serious look at the life of an immigrant in America.

Q: (Bode Ojo) Congratulations on your achievement thus far. You’ve managed to play this game of chess very well, and you’ve represented your country of origin well.

Q: How did you start playing this game, and did you know then that you were going to be very good at it?

I was taught the game of chess by my older brother, Olubunmi Adu, in the late 80s, and after that we had several battles for a while before I was able to catch up with him. After being able to defeat him, I took on the strongest players in my area then and slowly from being the lowest rated player, I became the top rated player in my area, Jakande Estate Abesan in Lagos State, Nigeria

Q: Well, you’re clearly  a very brilliant and intellectual individual. How many moves ahead do you calculate on the chess board?

Chess Players get that question a lot, but actually the extent of how many moves you make depends on the position in front of you. Some positions require just to be able to see about one to two moves, while some positions you need to be able to see about ten moves ahead with a couple of side variations, which might equally be as long as ten moves or less, sometimes more.

Q: Do you see chess as a game of combat or a game of art?

I see it as both. When I sit across anyone over a game of chess, I want to win the game. It’s a fight, it’s combat, it’s a clash of wits, it’s either I get your king or you get mine. There is only going to be one king standing at the end of the game; that’s my goal. But sometimes games end in a draw. The art part is the ability to create a combination (forced sequence of moves) which might entail sacrificing some chess pieces like your knight, rook, or even queen for the ultimate goal of checkmating the king. It is like an artist with his brush on a canvass.

Q:  Do you then prepare at all for all these games? You seem to just have the instincts and skills within.

Oh yes, I prepare for the games. Like the great Emmanuel Lasker (second World Champion) said, skills can take you that far, you cannot rely basically on the skills; you have to strive to learn other parts of the game, mostly the theory aspect.

Q:  How many hours do you spend preparing for this game in your youth days, compared to now?

Very good question. I used to study for about 6 hours a day back home in Nigeria. I love to study and then go to tournaments to show what I study. At some point in Nigerian chess, I was known as a theoretician. I could tell you by looking at a position who played a game, his/her opponent, year game played and where….but now, I HARDLY study for one good hour at a stretch. I do more teaching than playing nowadays, but I still have a lot of hopes of being Nigeria’s first Grandmaster of Chess. Just a lot of work to put in, and of course getting a sponsorship is the most important.

Q: Which has been your best chess playing years and whom would you consider your strongest rival of your time?

My best chess-playing year would be 1996. I won almost all the tournaments in Nigeria that year, although I became Nigerian National Champion in 1995. Odion Aikhoje was my strongest rival. He was the testing ground for most of my studying then. Anytime I study some games or position, I get to use it against him. This pretty much helped us both. He always relied on his talent, which did help him out a lot then. But I always told him his talent is no match for a well-prepared theoretician. He is currently based in London now. For a while we both were the two top rated players in Nigeria for a long time.

Q: What are your plans to participate in these two professional chess organizations FIDE and PCA?

Well I play in FIDE events all the time. PCA was formed when Garry Kasparov and Nigel Short broke away from FIDE in 1993 to play their World Championship Match. PCA means Professional Chess Association.

Q: Chess preparation via computers is rapidly growing. What are your thoughts towards chess playing varieties like Chess Genius and Fritz?

Chess playing computers are on the rise. Right now the best Chess players are no match for the computers. The strongest computer playing chess now is Deep Rybka 3.

Q: Most of the thirteen world champions originated from Russia. What is their social status there?

They were well respected and looked up to. Even the Russian government had huge interest in who is who among the best in the country.

Q: Whom do you consider as the strongest player now, Kasparov or Karpov?

Kasparov, definitely.

Q: What do you like to say about chess in India, also believed to be the birthplace of chess?

Chess in India is actually experiencing a huge boom. I think India has the highest number of junior players in the world, and I think this is largely due to the effect of the current World Champion GM Visiwananthan Anand. The second highest female player in the world now and ever is an India GM Koneru Humpy.

Q: What are your general comments and experience with regards to playing chess for a country like Nigeria?

I love to play for my country. It is always something I look forward to and enjoy, but it has not been fun most of the time; it has been very frustrating.

Q:  Off the chess record, you share the same last name as the legendary singer/artiste (Sade Adu), and you both seem to have hailed from the same hometown. Are you related to her?

Sade is my first cousin. She is the daughter of my dad’s late brother Uncle Bisi Adu.
