Nigerian Basketball Team is grouped and might face the All-Star team USA at the 2012 Olympics in London.  WOW!!, this is a big deal, that our players will be matched one-on-one with the likes of superstars such as LeBron James, Kobe Bryant, Kevin Durant, Dwyane Wade and many others

Factory78tv, one of our media partners in the U.K, had the privilege of joining the historic Nigerian Basketball team D’Tigers for a training session in London right before the competition started. The players were in full competition mode after a dramatic and inspiring win against The Dominican Republic giving the team the final Basketball competition spot at the London 2012 games. Watch the history makers train and chat to F78tv about their journey to London and their expectations for the championship.

The Gala was a success and a well attended event with many special guests, including representatives of the Mayor of Katy, Katy Chief of Police, and Houston City Council Members.  There were also a few NFL stars in attendance, including James Ihedigbo, Russell Okung of the Seattle Seahawks, DeMeco Ryans of Houston Texans, and Amobi Okoye himself, just to mention a few.

This new trailer shows the kids in Nigeria talking about their hopes and dreams and their need for help. Just as we commended one of NFL’s young muscle ‘Amobi Okoye’ for his big commitment to changing and providing opportunities for the kids of Africa through Education and Sports; We are also commending Ngo Okafor for his contributions towards Nigerian and in his effort to make champions out nothing.

An annual event that is hosted by the Amobi Okoye Foundation and Invictus 91.

 

The offensive linesmen took the medal home this year again, and the MVP of this years game was awarded to NBA forward star ‘Gerald Green’.  The event also featured several NFL players and other celebrity guests, who were able to raise money for the Future Teachers of America.

Check out his mansion in London on ‘Give it up for Lenton’, an ESPN show.

Background:

Mikel Obi, a Nigerian-born professional football mid-fielder, began his career with Plateau United in Nigeria before spells with Ajax Cape town in South Africa and Norwegian side Lyn Oslo. He fast became one of the most sought-after young players in Europe and in 2005 Manchester United beat a host of interested parties to his signature. But Mikel had other ideas, and despite appearing at a press conference in a United shirt, the midfielder claimed he had been pressured into the move and wanted to move to Chelsea instead. A legal dispute ensued but eventually the Chelsea deal was done, costing the Blues £16 million in a complex judgment which involved money being paid to both United and Lyn.

For Nigeria, he was touted as a future superstar after a series of scintillating displays in the 2005 Under-20 World Youth Championships earned him the Silver Ball for second best player in the tournament, behind Lionel Messi. He played for the Super Eagles in the 2006, 2008 and 2010 African Nations Cup, and played seven games of the qualifying campaign for the 2010 World Cup.

A trip led by Amobi Okoye Foundation, which also included Houston Texans outside linebacker Connor Barwin, and a group of other NFL players, Coaches, International Federation of American Football (IFAF), College Interns, Doctors, and Volunteers (Including New York State Senator, and California Mega Million Lottery Winner) to a nearly two weeks fulfilling philanthropic mission to Nigeria as part of his yearly C.A.T.E program.

Barwin Recounts Nigeria Journey: MyFoxHOUSTON.com

Barwin is currently on the rebound from a horrific ankle injury in game 1 of last season that ended his season. He said he is almost 100 percent and will be ready for training camp, whenever that is because of the lockout.
During the trip to Nigeria, Barwin visited schools, medical clinics, and helped with clinics for kids and for coaches in an effort to expand the knowledge of football to the people of Nigeria where the sport is in its infancy.
It was an eye-opening experience for Connor.
